NTE5 SOCKET

The definitive test for broadband using an isolated master socket NTE5

The lower half of the master socket can be temporarily unscrewed to reveal an inner socket. This isolates all your internal phones and is done at your own risk. You then plug your broadband filter into the exposed telephone socket (seen here on the left), and your router is connected into the filter whilst running tests. If your broadband does not work (and you are sure your filter, router and computer are ok) then the problem is ours to resolve at no charge. If it does work, but does not with the face plate back on, a chargeable visit is required to resolve your internal telephone wiring issues.

Sometimes we have to involve BT Openreach who maintain your phone line for us. You must not touch the wiring inside the NTE5 master socket (towards the back as opposed to any internal wiring connected to the back of the face plate). This is a legal requirement.

 NON-NTE5 SOCKET

                                                  NTE5 Mastersocket

Broadband often works from other internal extensions but disconnection issues and reduced speed can be   experienced.

The master socket is distinguished from other internal telephone extensions by having the face plate in 2 halves (the 2 screws and the socket for the phone are not in the middle but towards the bottom). Some premises do not have these sockets.

Broadband usually works best when your router is connected to the master socket.

 NTE2000 SOCKET

Identify if the    faceplate is a  split'   (NTE5)

A non-split socket will have the sockets and screws in the middle. You can also identify a split socket looking at the side as bottom half comes out separately.

If your socket is around 68mm wide it is an old style socket or an extension socket and you cannot use faceplate filters or the BT I-Plate on this socket.

If your socket is around 85mm wide it is a newer style socket and may be compatible.

A newer socket which has an "Openreach" logo on already has the function of an I-Plate built in so you wouldn't benefit from installing one in this case. Any other split sockets (such as those with the "T" logo or BT "Piper" logo) should be compatible and an I-Plate may help improve your broadband speed or reliability.

 Microfilter &  splitter

The NTE-2000 replaces the lower half of a BT NTE5 master socket. The NTE-2000 faceplate is the type of ADSL faceplate that BT Openreach engineers fit on a full ADSL installation. The NTE2000 requires a BT NTE5 socket to be fitted. The faceplate provides an ADSL modem/router outlet and a standard BT filtered telephone outlet.NTE2000 will have inbuilt microfilter.

Standalone Filters

Standalone filters, just referred to as Microfilters, plug into an unfiltered telephone socket and come in many different shapes.Generally you can check for faulty Microfilters by unplugging all Microfilters (and at the same time unplugging the telephone equipment connected to the filters) from the line and replacing them one by one until you find the one causing the problem.
